Title of talk: Historical and Future Development of Switching Arc Modelling and Simulation: A Personal Perspective

Biography:

He received his undergraduate education firstly at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and continued his studies at the University of Cambridge where he graduated in 1965 with a first class honours degree (B.A) in Electrical Sciences. In the same year he was awarded a college prize and the Salomon Scholarship by Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He was awarded D.Phil in plasma physics in 1969 by Oxford University. In 1995 he was conferred the Degree of Doctor of Science (DSc) for his distinguished contribution to low-temperature plasma physics by Oxford University. He was elected fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers in 1994. In 2016 he was awarded HonDLL by Liverpool University and an Hon. DEng by Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Suzhou, China.

He was a research fellow at Oxford University in 1968 and then at Imperial College, London, before he joined the University of Liverpool in 1970, where he was lecturer, reader and professor. He was the Head of Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics from 1998 to 2001. He became emeritus professor in 2003. From 2003 to 2005 he was an advisor to the Vice Chancellor of Liverpool University. He served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University from June 2005 to January 2011. He was intimately involved in the setting up of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in Suzhou and was its first Executive Vice-President in 2006.

For many years he was actively engaged in fundamental research and applications of low-temperature plasmas, in environment protection using ground penetration radar, and in the application of artificial intelligence to electrical power engineering. He has published over 250 papers in major international journals and conferences. He has given a number of keynote speeches and lectures at international conferences, universities and research institutes. He served on the committees of several international conferences, the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Electrical Engineers of the UK. He is a member of Current Zero Club.

Professor Fang was a William Watson Girling Fellow at the University of Sydney, Australia in 1978-79 and a visiting scientist at the University of Innsbruck, Austria in 1978. From 2008 to 2012 he was a professor at Xian Jiaotong University. He is also an honorary professor of the University of Liverpool and Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University. He was a guest professor at Tsinghua University, Shenyang University of Technology and Xi’an Jiaotong University. He was a consultant to Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, LG Systems and Hyosung Corporation in South Korea.
